Iranian Violin

In terms of shape, the Iranian violin is closely related to classical violin. Starting at the age of 10, Shawn Tavakol learned how to play the instrument in Iran with the Suzuki Method. In his teaching, Shawn combines this learning method with Iranian traditional repertoires which enables him to introduce more naturally Iranian Violin’s stylistic specificities including ornementation, microtonal intervals, tuning, etc.

Class Content and Objectives

  • Violin handling
  • Bow handling and using
  • Teaching of different playing positions
  • Learning of simple traditional melodies
  • Initiation to Iranian musical system (dastgāh): microtonal intervals, micro-motifs (gushe), basic radifs (Sada, Mirza Abdollah…)
  • Improvisation from Iranian musical structure (advanced)
