The darbouka is one of the best-known percussion instruments in the Middle East. This cup-shaped instrument consists of a barrel to which an animal skin (e.g. goat or fish) or a plastic membrane is attached. Percussionist Joseph Khoury, a skilled musician trained at the Lebanese Conservatoire and then with the great Turkish masters (Bünyamin Olguncan, Suat Borazan and Hamdi Akatay), will transmit a variety of techniques, rhythms and strike sequences specific to this versatile instrument.
This workshop is open to all levels, and costs $50+tx.
Darboukas will be loaned free of charge (if needed) to early registrants.
