Teacher

Nicolas Royer-Artuso is a composer, musician (oud, electric violin, and fretless guitar), linguist, musicologist, and writer. His work has been presented in Germany, England, Armenia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Finland, France, Georgia, the Netherlands, Italy, Lebanon, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey, and the United States.

There are two sections to this group course: a vocal component and an instrumental component.

1) Vocal section

The vocal section is open to students of all levels and requires no prior experience. Participants will study works from the Ottoman classical repertoire as well as from the post-Republican period. The repertoire will be selected according to the level of the group.

Schedule: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., led by Hulya Demirel (vocal component). From 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., singers join the Ottoman instrumental ensemble for group practice.

2) Instrumental section

The instrumental component is intended for advanced students. Good sight-reading skills and/or a very strong memory are required, as the repertoire consists of some of the most advanced instrumental works in this tradition, many of which are lengthy. Students are therefore expected to prepare before each class in order to gain a working command of the piece or pieces being studied that week.

The course is conducted in a format similar to a masterclass, in which each student performs a section of the work individually and receives feedback and demonstrations from the instructor. The repertoire is also performed as an ensemble, fostering a musical approach that takes into account the distinctive contributions of different types of instruments (for example, plucked-string instruments versus sustained-note instruments).

With a few exceptions, students must play an instrument capable of producing the various microtones characteristic of this musical tradition.

Schedule: 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., led by Nicolas Artuso-Voyer (instrumental section).
