Anit Ghosh
Anit is a violinist and multi-instrumentalist of Indian and Saguenay origins. After training in jazz violin, he explored and incorporated music from various cultures into his repertoire. This passion led him to accompany numerous artists from diverse backgrounds, including Labess, Syncop, Hassan El Hadi, Saïd Mesnaoui, Hakim Salhi, Cheb Dino, and Karim Saada from the Maghreb, Brazilians Julia Pessoa, Nico Beki, and Forró Rasta-Paix, Yemeni singer Marie Tresanini, as well as the creations of métis Moe Clark. Several of his projects are leading groups on the Montreal music scene, such as the Gypsy Kumbia Orchestra, Ayrad, Mélisande (électrotrad), Roma Carnivale, and La Chango Family. His fascination with the music as performed by Romani musicians has led him to explore this repertoire with Nomanka (Balkan music) and Djoumbush (Turkish music). Additionally, he has pursued training in Morocco, Turkey, and India to perfect his art with renowned masters.
A guided tour of fiddling styles from around the world, exploring violin performance (repertoire, ornamentation, rhythms, style & social context) as it is practiced in the traditional music of various cultures. In small group classes, we will play music from Eastern Europe, the Bosphorus region, India, North Africa, Scandinavia, Ireland, Brazil and Quebec. While there will be written support material, we will prioritize learning by ear and by imitation, while applying a holistic approach to integrating new musical languages.
Students will build a versatile foundation from which they can easily grow. They will have learnt well loved tunes from all of the cultures visited and will be more familiar with distinctions between the different playing styles. They will acquire a more “vocal” way of playing, while refining their ear, awareness of microtonality, sense of groove and improvisational skills.
The groups will be organized into two different levels of difficulty:
Level 1: At least 2-3 years of experience with the violin. Able to locate the notes on the instrument and comfortable with the bow. Curiosity, determination and openness to learning by ear.
Level 2: Intermediate to expert violinists. There will be concepts and material of interest to fiddlers of all levels.
If unsure which level to choose, you may discuss directly with Anit. Both levels may be followed simultaneously. Other melodic instruments may be admitted after approval with the teacher
