Joana Sargiacomo
Passionate about dance since childhood, Joana has been dedicated to teaching traditional Basque dances in Montreal with Euskaldunak Quebec since 2024, where she currently serves as vice president and coordinator of mutxiko workshops. Trained in classical, jazz, and contemporary dance, Joana combines artistic practice with an inclusive teaching approach. With her professional background in project management and workshop facilitation, she offers a structured approach rooted in the joy of moving together. “For me, teaching mutxikos is about keeping alive a festive and unifying tradition that brings together music, movement, and collective memory.”
Come and discover mutxikos, the popular dances of the Basque Country, which are performed in circles in village squares during festivals. A mutxiko is a series of steps set to a melody that requires dancers to listen carefully.
The Basque Country is a region west of the Pyrenees where dance, song, and music play a central role in one of Europe’s oldest cultures.
The session ends with a ball, a festive occasion where students dance the mutxikos they learned during the session alongside more advanced dancers who join the group.
Classes are offered in French.
The teacher also communicates in Spanish and English and can adapt to the language spoken by the participants.
Classes offered in partnership with Euskaldunak Québec – Association des Basques du Québec
Euskaldunak – Quebec (Association des Basques du Québec) is a cultural organization based in Montreal, dedicated to promoting Basque culture in Quebec.
