This workshop will focus on the playing technique for gittern and medieval lute, with comparative approach to the plectrum technique of non-european plucked chordophones.
The seminar is aimed at professionals and amateur medieval music performers and renaissance lute players who want to approach plectrum technique. It will consist of an overview of different technical solutions: plectrum, plectrum and fingers, intabulation and strumming techniques, and a reflection on the role of plucked instruments in various medieval and late-medieval repertoires.
Peppe Frana biography:
Passionate about music from an early age, he began with rock guitar before immersing himself in modal traditions inspired by composer and musician Ross Daly. He studied oud and plectrum instruments in Greece and Turkey with masters such as Yurdal Tokcan and Ömer Erdoğdular. A meeting with Ensemble Micrologus sparked his interest in medieval European music, and he soon became a leading specialist in Italian Trecento repertoire. Since 2013, he has studied medieval lute at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under musicologist and lutenist Crawford Young. He holds a degree in Philosophy and regularly performs at major musical festivals across Italy and internationally.
