Turas (or touras) are large sagats, finger cymbals used by percussionists throughout the Arab world. This instrument, whose history dates back to ancient Egypt, is played with four cymbals, two in each hand, secured to the thumb and middle finger with elastic bands that allow for great freedom of movement. Versatile and expressive, it can be used to accompany other musicians or to perform solos. This introduction, led by Hany Morgan, a recognized master of the turas, is a unique opportunity to discover a fascinating instrument and explore the richness of its sound.

What's the difference between sagats and turas?
The term “sagat” refers to finger cymbals in general, while turas are a larger model.
How are sagats/turas made?
Early models were made of wood. Today, they are generally made of brass or other metal alloys. Their diameter ranges from 7 to 12 cm, with larger models favoured by professional musicians.
How do you play sagats/turas?
Sagats/turas are played with four cymbals, two in each hand. Elastic bands secure them to the thumb and middle finger, allowing for great freedom of movement. The instrument can be used to accompany other musicians or to perform solos.
Do I need to bring my own sagats/turas to take the course?
A few pairs of sagats/turas are provided for participants during the course, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you have them.
