René Orea
Flutist (master), composer (master) and musicologist (Ph.D.), Rene Orea plays Western classical and Latin American popular music. He studied at the Université de Montréal and in Venezuela (Musical University Studies Institute and Venezuela’s National Orchestra System known as El Sistema), and learned popular music through family inheritance and oral tradition. Apart from Western concert flute, he also plays Andean flutes and cuatro, a typical string instrument from Venezuela. He currently teaches rhythmic and choral singing in the Music to Kids program (pilot project of Mr. Kent Nagano and the OSM) and in his own personal teaching space, Orea Musique, while leading Ukulele groups at the Centre de loisirs Masson. In the past, René taught at the École des jeunes de l’Université de Montréal and at the Simon-Bolivar Conservatory from El Sistema.
A member of the multicultural musical project Sonidos Vivos (Peru), he is also part of InCrescendo, an act which performs Venezuelan music in Montreal.
A fellow of the Canada Council for the Arts, of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and of the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries, René was awarded with the Galaxy Rising Star from CBC in 2005.
His musical playing, as well as his compositions, have been heard in concert through different countries (Canada, England, France, Germany, Peru, Portugal, Switzerland, United States, Venezuela). He also created musical arrangements for the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (Norway) and the National Orchestra of Peru.
