Classical Arabic singing

The Muwashah (plural Muwashahat) is the first vocal passage of the waṣla (series of interconnected muwashshaḥāt) of a classical Arabic repertoire, a musical form that appeared and flourished in Aleppo in the 17th century. The text of this musical form comes partly from a poem written in Andalusia, from a qaṣīda written in Baghdad, or even a text in Egyptian and Syrian dialect.

This course for beginners and intermediate levels focuses on the techniques of classical Arabic singing, in particular the repertoire of Muwashahat from Aleppo and Egypt. This course is aimed at both beginners and intermediate levels, with some singing experience but not exclusively in classical Arabic singing. The course focuses on familiarization with the Maqams, the interpretation of the Muwashahat repertoire and rhythms, as well as the basics of oriental singing technique.
