Anne-Marie Gardette
Dancer and teacher, Anne-Marie Gardette directs with Pierre Chartrand the company Danse Cadence a company dedicated to the diffusion of traditional and historical dance (danse.qc.ca). Seduced by the richness and refinement of the dances of the Renaissance (15th and 16th centuries) and the Baroque period (17th and 18th centuries), she has been presenting this repertoire on stage and teaching it regularly for more than 30 years. She began her professional career in her native France with the company Ris et Danceries. Upon her arrival in Montreal, she broadened her research into the dance of the New France period. As a choreographer, she has created various productions in early dance and music (“Le Bal des Ménestriers”, “Voyage Baroque”, “Gigue&Baroque”, etc.).
The Renaissance was an important period for the development of dance in the West, as it saw the emergence of the very first dance treatises. This series of workshops will focus on the dances of the Italian courts of the Quattrocento and Cinquecento (bassa danza, balletto, etc.). We will also dance the ball repertoire in use in France at the end of the 16th century, based on Thoinot Arbeau’s essential Orchésographie (branle, pavane, gaillarde, etc.).
These workshops are open to everyone, and musicians who play this repertoire (Praetorius, Attaingnant, Gervaise, Phalèse, etc.) and want to learn about the dances are also welcome.
Each workshop will cover different dances, so they can be taken independently.
