Alexandre Roux-Dufort
Originally from France, Alexandre Roux-Dufort built his career as a musician in Quebec and quickly made a name for himself as a young talent in saxophone and composition. He received his Master’s degree in Jazz Interpretation from Université Laval, in the class of saxophonist Janis Steprans and pianist Rafael Zaldivar. A gifted student, he also took courses in France with renowned musician Baptiste Herbin and in New York with Vincent Herring.
As a saxophonist and flutist, Alexandre has performed in Quebec and France in a variety of musical projects, from jazz trio to big band. His dynamism and curiosity have led him to collaborate with several ensembles, including the Delasalle gypsy trio, the Brunnemer collective (Paon*Hyène, 2021), the neo-soul group Neat Summa Orchestra (Miracle!, 2022) and the FaMUL Jazz big band, for which he wrote several arrangements and original pieces (Entre-Deux, 2022). In 2023, he made his mark on the international scene by winning the Prix d’Honneur in composition at the Léopold Bellan International Competition in Paris.
Alexandre’s compositions explore the new sounds of jazz ensembles. Between tradition and innovation, his music lies at the crossroads of different musical styles, in which instrumentation, forms and rhythms are put into perspective. Alexandre has composed for chamber trio, wind quintet (Impressions d’orage, 2023), small jazz ensemble and big band. He was invited as composer-in-residence at the Cap Ferret Music Festival 2023.
Alongside his artistic career, since 2018 Alexandre has been nurturing his vocation for teaching saxophone, jazz music and improvisation. Involved in several schools, he founded a saxophone ensemble that stimulates group improvisation and the learning of a varied repertoire. From classical music to gypsy jazz, his pedagogy invites the discovery of different musical traditions, arranged and adapted for the whole saxophone family.
