Inimitable percussive dancer Nic Gareiss makes a rare trip to Montreal to perform a duo concert with fiddler Alexis Chartrand. Melding unparalleled virtuosity with an introspective sensibility, the two artists trace, with disarming spontaneity, their path across French Canadian, Appalachian and Irish traditions. Propelled by melodies inherited from Québécois folklore, Gareiss and Chartrand explore, with palpable pleasure, the sharing of sounds and gestures, blurring the lines between music and dance, melody and movement. This concert is a privileged opportunity to witness the contemporaneity of our traditions, the singular creativity of Nic Gareiss’ stepdancing, and Alexis Chartrand’s unique playing on the baroque violin.

The Renaissance was an important period for the development of dance in the West, as it saw the appearance of the very first dance treatises. This series of workshops will focus on the dances of the Italian courts of the Quattrocento and Cinquecento (bassa danza, balletto, etc.). We’ll also dance the ballroom repertoire in use in France at the end of the 16th century, according to Thoinot Arbeau’s indispensable Orchésographie (branle, pavane, gaillarde, etc.).
These four workshops, each lasting 2 hours, are open to all. Musicians who play this repertoire (Praetorius, Attaingnant, Gervaise, Phalèse, etc.) and want to learn more about its dances are also welcome.
Each workshop will cover different dances, so they can be taken independently.

The Masmoudi Quartette is made up of pianist Guillaume Martineau, double bassist Rémi-Jean LeBlanc, clarinetist Gabriel Paquin-Buki and oudist Mohamed Masmoudi, who is its artistic director. Recognized for their versatility, sensitivity and virtuosity, the four musicians present Eternal Cities, their first album in which the long and rich tradition of oriental music permeates each of Masmoudi’s compositions with its modes (maqamat) and metrics. Crossed with improvisations which sometimes borrow from the language of jazz, sometimes from classical subtleties, sprinkled with klezmer inflections and tango rhythms, Masmoudi’s works bear witness to the richness of a life begun in Tunisia and continued an ocean further, with a host of influences raked together along the way, in a process of real openness and experience.

Erkan Oğur, the inventor of the fretless guitar, is a critically acclaimed guitarist whose influence extends beyond international borders. His collaboration with Ismail Hakkı Demircioğlu, a master of the strings, has been hailed for its artistic alchemy and deeply emotional performances. The duo’s repertoire includes a mix of old and more recent Anatolian folk songs, described as “a joint attempt to remember” the soulful melodies of their homeland.
For over twenty years, Oğur and Demircioğlu have been breathing new life into Anatolian songs, blending traditional instruments like the saz and bağlama lute with the modern sounds of fretless guitar. Their collaborations have resulted in several acclaimed albums and concerts worldwide, drawing on musical traditions dating back to the 14th century.
