Autumn Musical Encounters

Women musicians of the world

November 26 and 27 2021

The Centre des musiciens is very pleased to host, in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Observatory for Creation and Research in Music (OICRM), its first Autumn Musical Encounters. The idea of this new annual meeting aims at addressing a reflection on a social issue, which is stimulated by the dialogue between its different actors, from the artistic, academic and social circles. For this first edition, we invite researchers and musicians to share their research and experience around the theme: Women musicians of the world. We will thus explore the professional paths of migrant musicians from various regions of the world.

Women musicians of the world will be an opportunity to hear researchers in sociology, anthropology, musicology and ethnomusicology, as well as musicians based in Montreal practicing different musical traditions. By combining their scientific and experiential knowledge, they will offer complementary perspectives on issues: 1) accessibility, opportunities and career advancement for migrant musicians; 2) representations, conventions and professional standards, as well as; 3) social dynamics and gender relations. These two days of the conference will shed light on the multiple challenges encountered by these artists throughout their careers. On the program: a series of conferences, roundtables discussions, web videos, an immersive virtual reality experience as well as 2 exceptional evening concerts.
