The Masmoudi Quartette is made up of pianist Guillaume Martineau, double bassist Rémi-Jean LeBlanc, clarinetist Gabriel Paquin-Buki and oudist Mohamed Masmoudi, who is its artistic director. Recognized for their versatility, sensitivity and virtuosity, the four musicians present Eternal Cities, their first album in which the long and rich tradition of oriental music permeates each of Masmoudi’s compositions with its modes (maqamat) and metrics. Crossed with improvisations which sometimes borrow from the language of jazz, sometimes from classical subtleties, sprinkled with klezmer inflections and tango rhythms, Masmoudi’s works bear witness to the richness of a life begun in Tunisia and continued an ocean further, with a host of influences raked together along the way, in a process of real openness and experience.

Erkan Oğur, the inventor of the fretless guitar, is a critically acclaimed guitarist whose influence extends beyond international borders. His collaboration with Ismail Hakkı Demircioğlu, a master of the strings, has been hailed for its artistic alchemy and deeply emotional performances. The duo’s repertoire includes a mix of old and more recent Anatolian folk songs, described as “a joint attempt to remember” the soulful melodies of their homeland.
For over twenty years, Oğur and Demircioğlu have been breathing new life into Anatolian songs, blending traditional instruments like the saz and bağlama lute with the modern sounds of fretless guitar. Their collaborations have resulted in several acclaimed albums and concerts worldwide, drawing on musical traditions dating back to the 14th century.
