Kamancheh

Individual classes by Showan Tavakol

Originally from Iran, the Kamancheh is a spike vielle that can also be encountered in the Balkans and the Middle-East up to Central Asia. This bowed string instrument is played with a variable-tension bow and consists in four strings tuned in fifths and fourths. On the lower part, the instrument’s spike is placed on the musician’s thigh while playing. Thanks to his extensive artistic & pedagogical experience, Shwan Tavakol’s can adapt the class with the student’s level accordingly.

Content and Objectives of the class

  • Vertical control and neck rotation
  • Handling, direction and control of the bow’s tension
  • Teaching of basic position and variants
  • Learning of simple traditional melodies
  • Initiation to Iranian musical system (dastgāh): microtonal intervals, micro-motifs (gushe), basic radifs (Sada, Mirza Abdollah…)
  • Improvisation from Iranian musical structure (advanced)
